Day 16: And People Think It’s Easy
Let me tell you the truth: writing this blog post at, let’s see, 11:13 p.m., just might be the last thing I want to do right now. In some ways blogging is a little like dieting in that when you slip, you tumble and you fall; then you have to figure out whether it’s worth the energy to get back up again. Do the rewards justify the time spent in keeping up to date, or even worse- having to dust yourself off and start up a new line? I remember in my campaigns class in college, we were amazed that our client expected to have a blog set up and have it maintain itself. We knew he didn’t know how much work went into it. But the question is: do we? In PR, a 9-5 day is the bare minimum, almost unheard of. Much more common are the 10-12 hour days. After that, who does have the time to keep up a personal blog? And if so, what’s the cap on quality? There have been a few topics that I’ve wanted to discuss but have either 1) posted a watered-down version or 2) shied away from them completely because I don’t have the time or energy to give them the thougt and deliberation they warrant. Is it really worth it to set a one-post-per-day minimum if the depth of your work is to be, well, shallowed? Or will it even have an effect? Let’s face it: if I allow myself to sleep without writing a post one night, will my next post be that much more insightful? Or will that day be simply lost?
